หลักการเปลี่ยน

            1.  เปลี่ยนคำกริยานำ ( Reporting Verb ) จาก said ให้เป็น asked, inquired, หรือ enquired
            2.  ถ้าประโยคคำถามใน Direct Speech เป็นประโยคคำถามแบบต้องตอบด้วย " YES หรือ NO "
                นั่นความหมายว่า ใช้กริยาช่วยขึ้นต้นประโยค ( Verb to be, Verb to do, Verb to have,
              Will, Shall, Can, May, etc. )  เมื่อทำเป็น Indirect Speech ให้เปลี่ยนกริยาช่วยเหล่านั้น
                เป็น if  หรือ  whether  เป็นคำเชื่อมระหว่างประโยคนำกับประโยคตาม
            3.  ถ้าประโยคคำถามใน Direct Speech เป็นประโยคคำถามแบบขึ้นต้นด้วย Question Word  นั่นคือ
                What, Where, When, Why, Who, Which, How  ไม่ต้องใส่ if  หรือ  whether
                  ให้ใช้  Question Word เหล่านั้นมาทำหน้าที่ได้เลย
            4.  ข้อความของ Indirect Question จะต้องทำให้เป็น ประโยคบอกเล่า เสมอ
            5.  หลักการเปลี่ยน Tense ยังคงใช้วิธีการเดิม
 

          ตัวอย่างประโยค

          ใช้กริยาช่วยขึ้นต้นประโยคใน Direct Speech

              Direct     :   He said to me, " Are you going to Chiang Mai on Sunday? "
            Indirect  :   He asked me if I was going to Chiang Mai on Sunday.

            Direct     :   She said to me, " Have you ever studied French? "
            Indirect  :   She inquired me whether I had ever studied French.

            Direct     :   They said to us, " Do you speak Chinese? "
            Indirect  :   They asked us if we spoke Chinese.

            Direct    :   She said to him, " Can you swim? "
            Indirect  :   She enquired him whether he could swim.

            Direct     :   John said to her, " Will you go to the party tonight? "
            Indirect  :   John asked her if she would go to the party that night.

            Direct    :  We said to him, " Should we postpone the appointment to next Monday? "
            Indirect  :  We inquired him whether we should postpone the appointment to Moday after.

         ใช้ Question Word ขึ้นต้นประโยคใน Direct Speech

              Direct     :   I said to Tony, " How long have you been here? "
            Indirect  :   I enquired Tony how long he had been here.

            Direct     :   She said to me, " What is your name? "
            Indirect  :   She asked me what my name was.

            Direct     :   They said to him, " Where did you go last night? "
            Indirect  :   They inquired him where he had gone the night before.

            Direct     :   My mother said to me, " Why don't you go to school yesterday? "
            Indirect  :   My mother asked me why I did not go to school the day before.
